Troop Outing / Activity Archive 2003
Boy Scouts of America - Troop 401 - Steubenville, Ohio
January 2003 - the Troop participated in the Two Chiefs / Buckeye Combined District Klondike Derby. We had 29 scouts attend, 26 of whom camped overnight in single digit temperatures! We are proud of their fortitude and their winter camping abilities! The troop's Senior-Polaris patrol took first place overall at the event and first place in the map and compass activity. Nam patrol took first place in the scavenger hunt. Congratulations on on a job well done! We are very proud of your hard efforts and skills knowledge.
February 2003 - the Troop held its second Junior Leader Training Day. Fourteen scouts participated, learning some valuable leadership skills. Our thanks go out to JP Rigaud who put the day's presentations together. Nice work!
February 2003 - 13 scouts attended a day outing at Sandscrest Scout Reservation where they had some competition with lashing skills, survival shelter building and map and compass challenges. There was over 15 inches of snow left on the ground from a major winter storm that hit the area which brought home the idea of how useful snow shoes could be! The day ended with a snowball fight at Fort Irish.
March 2003 - 18 scouts attended our Patrol Spirit Weekend Overnighter at Fernwood State Forest. The scouts had a lot of fun and many also got a number of rank requirements completed. The weather was great (not a cloud all weekend and 45/70 low/high temps made this outing one of the best weather outing ever!
April 2003 - Fun / Advancement overnighter was held at Salt Fork State Park. Even though the weatherman predicted rain Friday evening and Saturday morning, we only experienced a drizzle during the night. The scouts had a good time playing games in the wide open group camp area and also had time to work on rank advancement and several scouts earned their Totin Chip card. We had several of our new scouts attending and they had a great time and loved the outdoor cooking!
May 2003 - Troop Short Hike Backpacking Trip to Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia. We hiked 3 miles into Judy Springs Camp via Seneca Creek Trail. We were greeted with rain at the trailhead on Saturday morning and it basically rained or drizzled the entire time we were there. Scouts and adults gathered around the tarped campfire Saturday night to sing songs and tell stories. Earlier in the afternoon we ventured to the falls on Seneca Creek where eleven brave scouts and one adult jumped into the cold water below the falls. They were responding to a reward challenge of an ice cream sundae from the Troop Committee Chair. In spite of the weather, a great time was had by all, including several first time backpackers.
June 2003 - The first Saturday of the month saw the Troop going on a 24 mile bike hike along the beautiful Ohio River from Pike Island Lock and Dam to Wheeling, West Virginia. Ten scouts participated and had an easy and enjoyable day biking along the river trail.
July 2003 - The Troop attended the second week of the Ohio River Valley Council's Summer Camp program at Fort Steuben Scout Reservation. A total of 26 scouts attended earning 89 merit badges with at least nine scoutmaster conferences held for rank advancement. This was the eleventh year the Troop has has attended. Tuesday evening saw one of the worst thunder/wind storms to hit the reservation in its 40 plus year history! Many trees were blown down and the chain saws were heard well into the night. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured as the storm hit when most scouts and leaders were still at the mess hall.
August 2003 - The Troop attended the Diocese of Steubenville's first annual Boy Scout Retreat held on the St Michael's Church grounds in Carlisle, Ohio. The camping outing was well attended with 26 scouts and 10 scouters / fathers. Heavy rains presented a challenge for campfire building skills but all managed to have a great outing while learning more about how to integrate Jesus Christ into our everyday lives and scouting activities.
September 2003 - Troop short hike backpacking overnighter was on the schedule for September to Bear Run Nature Reserve near Ohiopyle, PA. Eight scouts and 3 scouters attended and had a great time honing back country camping skills. We took a three plus mile hike on Saturday to some areas of the Nature Reserve previously unexplorered by the Troop.
October 2003 - In October, the Troop camped at Heritage Scout Reservation in Farmington, PA. This is the greater Pittsburgh Scout Council's summer camp location. It is a very nice facility. The Troop took advantage of an orienteering course on the grounds Saturday.
November 2003 - A cooking skills overnighter was planned for November. Some of the attending scouts tried new recipes and found that camp food can be very delicious! The cold weather (low 20s / high 40) didn't stop the scouts from having an enjoyable time. No one froze overnight and only one scout's coat melted at the campfire because he got too close (a first for the Troop!).
December 2003 - The Troop held its Junior Leader Training Day in December. Over twenty scouts attended who learned about leadership skills, interacted with challenging games and feasted on pizza at the end of the day.
